The New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, First Department

This awesome and imposing courthouse at 41 East 25th Street, at the corner of Madison Avenue, was designed by the architect James Brown Lord, commissioned in 1896. The concept for the building was for it to be a physical expression of the ideals of the law. Lord was responsible for the construction and also oversaw the art and decoration of the buildings interior and exterior. The court first opened in 1900.

We’ve heard that you can ask to take a free walk around inside to see the murals and design work of the interior. It seems to be at the whim of the site security, so it’s not a guaranteed thing, if you should be curious, but it is said to be quite impressive inside.
