Glenfarclas Whisky Taste-Off…15, 21, & 25 yr. olds🥃

I decided (since I had them) that I’d do a direct comparison taste-off between these 3 different age statements of a whisky brand that is quite widely respected and even loved by some.

Nothing scientific here – I’m just sniffing & sipping some whisky and then writing down my impressions, in the hope of helping anyone out there who shares similar tastes.

It turned out that I was not completely happy with my first set of findings and so, a few months later, I revisited this test, to see if anything had changed.

It hadn’t.

Anyway, let’s get to the actual taste-off & see what transpired…

The appearance of these 3 age statements is very, very similar – ranging from pale amber in the 15, to not quite as pale amber in the 25 (I probably should’ve taken a picture before the bottles were empty!) VERY similar.

…and onwards-

The 15


First thought – “Ooh! That’s pretty!”
It’s sherry all the way on the nose. Light, sweet, enticing sherry & raisins.


A bit hot, with a very mild alcohol warming in the back of the throat. The sherry overtones are still present and overall this reminds me perhaps of The Macallan 12yr. Old, except the flavor here dissipates rather too soon. Pleasant enough, but doesn’t live up to the promise of the first sniff. It’s a fairly thin whisky, offering not much in the way of mouthfeel/viscosity, and maybe that’s why it disappears from your tastebuds (and memory!) so quickly? But not bad for a relatively young whisky.

9/30 Follow-up Tasting:

Light & thin on flavor. Not too much alcohol heat. Everything vanishes from the mouth within minutes. Nothing to savor or relish. Mediocre whisky…for me, anyway.

The 21


Surprisingly faint, compared to the 15, which was a bit disappointing. It’s almost nonexistent!


Not at all surprisingly, there isn’t much for me to say taste wise. It’s again a thin liquid that comes in warm on your tongue, with a slightly longer buildup of heat in the back of the mouth, but no really interesting flavor that I could make out. It hints at flavor, but fails to deliver.
It’s just a whisky – not a terrible one, but by no means a very interesting one, to me.
So far, the 15 beats the 21, in my opinion. I just hope that the 25 bucks this emerging trend, and redeems the brand…

9/30 Follow-up Tasting:

Unimpressed. Again. Damn…

There’s a faint, funky smell, but I have to inhale really hard to find it…and it’s frankly not worth the effort, when found. Weak, insipid, uninspired, lackluster – Get the idea?


Please, please, please, may the taste be the jewel in the crown…

But, No. It isn’t. Again, I’d rather have a Macallan, because it’s what this seems to be trying to be…but failing.

9/30 Follow-up Tasting:

Nothing changed. I remain unimpressed by this whisky’s 3 age statements in my decidedly UN-professional tasting.

Even though such a brand as The Macallan doesn’t really do much for me any more, it is a whole lot more interesting than this Glenfarclas stuff.
Now I’m glad I never sprang for a full-size bottle of Glenfarclas at any age level. I’d have been terribly upset & considered it a waste of money.
I know that many whisky aficionados love themselves some Glenfarclas, but I guess I won’t be joining their ranks. I’d rather have any Dalmore, Balvenie, Lagavulin, or even The Macallan bottle selection, personally.

The only good thing I might have to say is that, of the 3, the 15yr old is maybe fairly decent. That’s it.

It ultimately comes down to individual taste, though, and I just found nothing inspiring here, for me personally.

I prefer bolder taste, more depth, nuances, smoothness, and much more individual character than I was able to find here.

…But your experience may be different to mine, so I’m not saying you won’t like it – but I am suggesting you find a way to taste some before splurging on a bottle, if only to see if it’s a drink you wouldn’t mind paying for and could enjoy an entire bottle of…
