Atlas is the Titan of Greek legend who “holds the sky aloft”. His other duties include turning the heavens on their axis.
The bronze statue of Atlas at 630 Fifth Avenue, directly opposite St. Patrick’s Cathedral, on 5th Avenue, was designed by Lee Lawrie and unveiled in 1937.
In keeping with the overall aesthetic and style of the entire Rockefeller Center complex, the statue was sculpted in the Art Deco style.
Atlas weighs 7 tons and is 45-feet tall.
Despite his obvious strength and power, even Atlas is wise to be cautious of Covid-19 and is -quite sensibly – wearing a face mask…
