‘Ella’ by Danielle Mastrion

This mural of Ella Fitzgerald can be seen in all its wonderful, colorful glory at the Ridge Hill Shopping Center in Yonkers, NY, on Fitzgerald Street!

Ella, though born in Newport News, Virginia in 1917, grew up in Yonkers. The ‘First Lady of Song’ spent her childhood years (in the 1920’s) on School Street (close to Downtown Yonkers), before moving down to Harlem in 1933, following the death of her mother.

Ella Fitzgerald’s singing earned her 13 Grammy awards and many, many other honors, most notably including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and honorary doctorate degrees from Yale and Harvard universities.
